This Is One Of The Most Unique Gifts
If you are looking for 30th birthday presents ideas that are totally different, here is one that is really cool. Why not have your man become a racecar driver for a day. This is the best gift I gave my fiancé Brandon, who was absolutely stoked by that idea. He had the thrill of his lifetime with this terribly exciting experience of becoming a racecar driver, even if it were only for one day. He looooooved it.
This is what and how it happened.
We both like cars, and more so, fast cars, and we like going to car museums and exhibits. We have seen cars that we didn’t even know existed. Many are customized to their owners’ specific needs. The most recent exhibit we went to was the Shelby Mustang car museum and exhibit. We did not know much about Carol Shelby, the designer of the Shelby mustang, who was also an award winning racecar driver. In fact, he dominated US road racing from 1952 to 1960, and won the 24 Hours of the LeMans race in 1959. He created the incredibly fast and supercharged Cobra race car, as well as the Shelby Mustang GT 350 race and street car. His cars are famous for speed and design.
Most cars at exhibits are not for sale; they are typically collectors’ items that belong to wealthy car lovers. But at the Shelby exhibit we were surprised to find out that there were a few cars that actually were up for sale, and they were real beauties to boot. I could just imagine owning one of those professionally souped up cars, and driving it home. Alas, for us they were so out of reach financially. And we were not out to purchase anything. But there were also some really great looking racecars on the exhibit floor that one could actually rent. What was also so convenient, was that the exhibit’s location was situated right across from a racecar track.
What a fortunate coincidence, don’t you agree? How enticing! Yes, one could reserve one of the rental racecars at the exhibit, drive it across the street to the racetrack and take a spin or two around the track. What an enormously exciting experience that must be for a guy who had always dreamed of just keeping the metal to the pedal and whooshing around the track like an Al Unser, a Mario Andretti, a Richard Petty, or even like the late Paul Newman. He would feel that incomparable rush of racing without any oncoming traffic to contend with, hitting top speed, letting the adrenalin flow freely, and flying by anything else in the road.
Aha! That’s when the idea for 30th birthday gift ideas for him hit me. Why not give him the gift of becoming a racecar driver for a day, driving a real honest-to-goodness racecar on a real racing track, sensing the thrill of what the professional racecar drivers experience and forever treasuring this single super sensation. I wanted this more than anything else for Brandon’s 30th birthday, and started doing some research.
I found out that there are racetracks that offer an option for people to rent one of their racecars. If they have never driven such a car, they can rent one that comes with an instructor. If however, they have had instructions in the handling of a racing machine, they can drive solo. I also learned that there are numerous driving “schools” that can prepare a person specifically for this type of adventure. Most of them have a slew of cars from which to choose. Brandon would fit in the category of not needing an instructor as he has had some experience with a fast car already. But not on a professional race track with a real speed machine!
So I went back to the track across the Shelby Mustang exhibit and made arrangements with the track management to have a racecar ready for Brandon’s 30th birthday. I did not tell Brandon anything about this until the day of. I “kidnapped” him, and drove him over to the racetrack. He had no idea what was going to happen until we got out of the car and were approached by the manager of the track who escorted us to the racecar that was ready for Brandon to drive. It was a beaut! Brandon could not believe what he saw. He was going to handle this phenomenal machine, alone on this awesome racetrack, no other drivers around, and he could just let go of all worries about speeding. He then suited up with the necessary, and professionally prescribed fire-retardant clothes, gloves, safety helmet and boots. He looked just like a professional racecar driver, ready to jump in the driver’s seat, rev the engine, and speed away. And that is just what he did. He raced that car several times around the track as if he were a medal winning champ, going at full speed towards the checkered flag that would proclaim him the winner. What an unforgettable sight that was for me. To see my man have the time of his life, doing something he had always wished for, and I made it happen for him. For Brandon, this was an experience that would put him in a category of uncontested racecar drivers. At least that is the way he and I think about it, because, after all, there was nobody on the track who surpassed the speed he went, and nobody who reached the checkered flag ahead of him. He was the champ of the day, on the track and off the track, because he was MY Champ!
